Community Boards
All Queens community board members are appointed by the Queens Borough President, pursuant to the City Charter, with half of the appointments being nominated by the City Council Member representing their respective Community Districts.
Community Boards play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts. Each Board holds monthly full membership meetings. Boards also hold hearings and issue recommendations about City budget, municipal service delivery and other matters that impact their communities.
Staff members from the Queens Borough President’s Office serve as liaisons between the Borough President’s Office and all 14 Community Boards and can connect constituents with the Community Boards that represent them.
The Queens Borough President’s Office also hosts public monthly meetings for District Managers and Board Chairs, often featuring presentations from city agencies on issues such as land use, budget and civic engagement initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to join a Community Board?
Our 2026 Community Board Application is live! The application takes just a few minutes to complete and must be submitted by Friday, February 13 at 11:59pm. Click here to apply.
In addition to new prospective applicants, current community board members seeking reappointment at the end of their term must re-apply.
What are the requirements to join a Community Board?
You must be a resident of New York City, be at least 16 years old and either live, work or have a significant interest (own a business, have children in a local school, etc.) in the community district you wish to serve.
What is the appointment process?
After the application submission deadline in mid February, each applicant will be asked to participate an interview with a Queens Borough President’s Office staff member.
Following the interview period, Borough President Richards will determine his class of community board appointees. Each applicant will be informed of the Borough President’s decision on their candidacy shortly before each community board member’s term of service begins on April 1.
What is the time commitment of a Community Board member?
Each member is strongly encouraged to attend their respective board’s monthly full board meeting, in addition to meetings of various community board committees they have joined.
Should a member apply for reappointment at the conclusion of their term, meeting attendance will play a significant role in Borough President’s decision on their candidacy.
What are the responsibilities of a Community Board member?
Members play an important advisory role in considering land use and zoning matters in their respective districts under the City’s Uniformed Land Use Review Procedure, in addition to holding hearings and issuing recommendations about the City budget, municipal service delivery and numerous other matters.
Each board has up to 50 unsalaried members, with each member serving a two-year term.
